Brass & opaline glass.
This exceptional chandelier, designed by the renowned Finnish designer Paavo Tynell around 1945, was a bespoke commission for the Myllykoski Paper Mill in Finland. Only six pieces of this rare ceiling lamp were ever produced, making it a true collector’s item of mid-century Finnish design.
Founded in 1892, Myllykoski Corporation was a historic Finnish paper manufacturer with operations across Finland, Germany, and North America. During this period, Tynell—celebrated as one of Finland’s foremost lighting designers—undertook numerous prestigious commissions. Between 1929 and 1932, Tynell, in collaboration with Taito Ltd, created lighting designs for the Finnish Parliament House, where his work remains an integral part of the interior to this day.
Taito Ltd also produced Tynell’s elegant lighting fixtures for Paimio Sanatorium, one of the icons of modernist architecture. Expanding internationally, in 1952 Taito Ltd signed an agreement with the Finnish American Trading Corporation, introducing Tynell’s timeless designs to the United States. His creations illuminated notable buildings such as Finland House on 50th Street in New York City and the United Nations Headquarters, solidifying Tynell’s legacy as a master of Scandinavian modern lighting design.
